Microdermabrasion Before & After: Does It Work?

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is one of the most common cosmetic procedures to improve overall skin tone and texture. Like dermaplaning and lip injections, it is also minimally invasive with little downtime. But does microdermabrasion actually work? Only a microdermabrasion before and after can truly tell, but one thing’s for sure: virtually everyone who tries microdermabrasion can expect noticeable results directly after the procedure.

At Skin Spa New York, our estheticians perform the procedures with expert care, resulting in a microdermabrasion before and after that you can truly see and feel. It’s effectively professional-grade skin exfoliation! The main goal is to minimize pores, acne scars, and fine lines; eliminate white and black heads; and polish up dry or dull skin. The overall effect is a more youthful appearance with a polished skin tone.

One of the major reasons that microdermabrasion is so popular is the fact that all skin types can utilize and benefit from it: those with oily, dry, normal, and combination skin are all candidates for microdermabrasion.

Overall, microdermabrasion is great for tired, dry skin; acne scars; and rough or uneven skin.

Microdermabrasion Before & After: How It Works

Microdermabrasion was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1996, so at this point there’s a wealth of options when it comes to the procedure, as well as decades of practice building toward the most noticeable microdermabrasion before and after results.

Although microdermabrasion is commonly used, most people still probably may not be aware of how it actually works. For instance, did you know that crystals are utilized during microdermabrasion? Targeting the outermost layer of skin, tiny exfoliating crystals are blown onto your skin, gently removing the outer layer. We then use a device known as the microderm vacuum to remove all the crystals and dead skin cells, revealing brand new skin cells for a more youthful expression!

A microdermabrasion treatment typically lasts between 20-60 minutes. Afterwards, a Skin Spa esthetician will apply a treatment mask in order to increase nutrient absorption and smooth the surface layer even more. For the first 24 hours, the treated area will look quite pink and feel dry and tight to the touch, a bit like a sunburn. You can use a moisturizer, but avoid makeup for at least 24 hours. If you have specific skin concerns, your esthetician can always advise on skincare suggestions and recommendations.

Note: microdermabrasion is not recommended for active acne. If that’s you, we recommend our guide to facials for acne instead!

Microdermabrasion Before & After: The Benefits

Microdermabrasion has a variety of benefits for your skin. Here’s what you can expect after undergoing microdermabrasion at Skin Spa:

Smoother, softer skin. Your skin texture will be evened out, your skin tone improved, and the size of your pores diminished, resulting in a more youthful look as well as revitalized skin!

Say goodbye to dead skin cells. This is where the professional-grade exfoliation comes into play! The crystals help slough off old and dead skin cells to reveal fresh skin.

Acne scar improvement. While microdermabrasion is not recommended if you have active acne, it’s a great solution to tackling acne scars because it promotes the growth of new skin.

Less fine lines, more circulation. Fine lines are retexturized to minimize their appearance while increased circulation promotes a more youthful appearance.

Microdermabrasion Before & After: Recovery

The great news about microdermabrasion is that the majority of clients will see improvements in tone, texture, and color after just one treatment! Skin typically regenerates in 30-day cycles, so a common routine for those new to microdermabrasion is three sessions of weekly treatments to clear the skin initially, followed by monthly maintenance visits for results that are sure to last.

Better yet, there’s NO downtime when you get microdermabrasion! It’s super simple to schedule an appointment during your lunch break and then head back to work right after. Other than dryness and sensitivity which will dissipate within 24 hours, normal activities are perfectly fine to resume. Your freshly glowing skin might turn a head or two, though!

Whether you’re a skincare devotee or new to microdermabrasion, before and after makes a huge difference! It’s tough to beat instant results. If you’re in New York or Boston, schedule an appointment at a Skin Spa New York near you!
