A Guide to Injectables (and Alternatives If That Isn't Your Thing)

The plastic surgery industry is booming—but it’s not just for those looking to turn back time. People as young as their 20s are looking to take advantage of the effects of cosmetic procedures that prevent and correct early signs of aging.

One of the most common corrective procedures is known as injectables, which are needle treatments that help minimize wrinkles and prevent the formation of new wrinkles by injecting a substance into the skin. These procedures are becoming increasingly more common, especially as the stigma against plastic surgery is lifted.

Let’s dive into the basics of injectables, as well as some alternatives if you’re not into the whole needle thing.

injectables

Neuromodulators

If this name seems unfamiliar to you, it’s probably because it’s the technical name for procedures like Botox, which has become a household name. Neuromodulators use botulinum neurotoxins to paralyze the muscles of the face around the injection site, preventing wrinkles in that area. Other common options include Jeuveau and Xeomin.

These injectables tend to wear off after a couple months, and they’re best used on areas such as the forehead, crow’s feet, and in between your eyebrows. Botox has been used for non-cosmetic uses as well, such as helping relieve excessive sweating in the armpits or the effects of TMJ in the jaw.

Side effects are possible, of course, namely mild pain or bruising. If you experience any other more serious symptoms, talk with your doctor. They could wear off after a couple days, or you could need corrective treatments.

Fillers

Fillers, in general terms, fill in, and thereby reduce the appearance of, wrinkles. They’re commonly used on laugh lines and lip lines. They can also be used to build up areas, such as cheekbones or nose, to highlight or even out an area of the face.

There are two major categories of fillers: those that contain hyaluronic acid and those that don’t.

Hyaluronic Acid Based

Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in your skin, which means there’s a lower chance you’ll have a reaction to the injection. Side effects can occur, however, including bruising and swelling. Common brand names of hyaluronic acid fillers include Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero.

Results tend to last 9 months, but can last up to a year. If you’re unhappy with your results, these fillers can be undone by injecting another type of acid that dissolves the original injection.

Non-Hyaluronic Acid Based

Other fillers work by injecting silicone, poly-L lactic acid, or calcium hydroxyapatite into your skin. Sculptura and Belafill are some brand names of non-hyaluronic acid fillers.

These fillers tend to last longer than hyaluronic acid filters because they’re not naturally found in the body, so they don’t break down as quickly. But that comes at a price—the risk of side effects is higher for this type of filler. In some extreme cases, these fillers may need to be surgically removed.
