FAQs
How does microdermabrasion work?
Microdermabrasion works on flaws at the surface level, treating only the outermost layer of skin. Tiny exfoliating crystals are blown onto the skin to gently remove the outer layer. The microderm vacuum removes the crystals and dead skin cells leaving the newer, younger skin cells to be revealed.
Radiance-enhancing microdermabrasion crystals boost your skin’s vitality. A treatment lasts between 20–60 minutes. Afterwards, a treatment masque is applied to increase absorption of nutrients and further smooth the surface layer of the dermis. Treatments leave the skin looking softer and brighter.
Not recommended for active acne on the skin. Please see Power Peels.
Am I candidate for microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a safe, noninvasive procedure that’s beneficial for all different skin types and conditions. Anyone who is unhappy with their skin texture or has trouble areas like sun damage or acne scarring are perfect candidates for microdermabrasion. If you have active breakouts on your skin, we would recommend trying a peel treatment as an alternative.
Is microdermabrasion painful?
Microdermabrasion should not be confused with dermabrasion, which is an invasive surgical procedure typically performed by dermatologists or plastic surgeons under local or general anesthesia. Microdermabrasion is non-invasive and requires no numbing gels or medicines.
The treated area will be pink and feel dry and tight for about 24 hours. The feeling is similar to sunburn or windburn. You can use a moisturizer, but some types of makeup shouldn’t be applied until 24 hours after the procedure. Your aesthetician will advise you on the best skin care products.
How many treatments will I need?
Many clients see improvements in the tone, texture, and color of treated areas after just one treatment. Since skin typically regenerates at approximately 30-day intervals, many people choose to start with weekly treatments for 3 sessions to clear up the skin, and then switch to a monthly maintenance regimen for long-lasting results.
What is the recovery like after microdermabrasion?
There is no downtime with a microdermabrasion treatment. You can walk out of our office and return to work or resume your normal activities. Your skin will be sensitive, but that’s the extent of the recovery. Within 24 hours, the sensitivity usually dissipates.
